Clicks and Traffic Distribution in Relation to Search Rankings

Traffic by Google Rank

This graph is a good example of the importance of improving search rankings for your business. Even though the graph was based on leaked search results data by AOL in 2006, it should still give you a good idea about click distribution.
You’ll immediately notice that a whopping 42% of searchers click on the first result. The drop off from #1 to #2 is also very substantial, with about 12% of searchers clicking on the second search result. Also, notice that only about 10% of searchers actually continue to the second page of search results.
What this Means for Your Business
If you’re ranking on the second or third page for your target keywords, do whatever you possibly can to get over the hump and onto the first page. With only about 10% of searchers seeing the second page, and much less getting to the third page, you need to make absolutely sure you’re doing everything you can to be on the first page.
If you are on the first page but not at the top, keep at it until you achieve the pinnacle of search rankings, the highly coveted #1 position. You are on the right track and doing the right things if you’re already on the first page, so just continue SEO efforts until everyone else is chasing you for the top spot.
